Makeup Trends for Summer

November 25th, 2010 | Posted in Blog

We’ve discussed what’s hot for summer. We’ve discussed the must buys and the must haves (Hint: everything Review!).  We’ve discussed bags and shoes, shoes and bags. We’ve discussed jewellery and accessories. Now can we talk about summer makeup? Yes we can.

The summer 2011 shows were very 70’s inspired but that doesn’t mean hippy BoHo. Oh NO! Designers were in love with all things grown up and glamorous. From bright decadent lips, to high impact eyes, metallic shimmers or a pared down sleek minimal look there was something to suit everyone.

Here are the 4 major makeup trends for summer (and a fabulous Review dress that works with each look!).

The eyes have it.
It might be a swipe of simple, strong orange, it could be a smoky smudge of blue or an outrageous 70’s metallic green: whatever colour you go for this look is all about a dramatic eye. Chanel did it best with the most beautiful smoky grey shadow smudged to perfection. Remember when you go for a knockout eye you must keep the lips pale and unobtrusive. Gorgeous!
Tip: Wear with Review’s purple one shoulder ‘Melrose’ dress.

Major Mouths.
Who doesn’t want kissable lips? Designers loved strong powerful lips and went for colours that were bold and bright. From strong futurist orange at Marni, to hot Neon pink at Jil Sander or sexy deep dark glossy red at YSL , it’s simply impossible to ignore these statement making mouths. Fabulous!
Tip: Wear with Review’s digital stripe ‘Lotus’ dress.

It’s all natural.
It’s about clean and simple. It’s about taking it back to basics. It’s about a minimal but very sophisticated look.  Just because you have naturally pretty makeup doesn’t mean it should be boring. The coolest designers such as Balmain, Chloe and Celine all chose this subtly unadorned makeup to compliment their edgy looks. Chic!
Tip: Wear with Review’s “Sunset Bloom’ floral 50’s dress.

Modern Metallics.
What’s not to love about a bit of shimmer and shine? What’s not to love about a bit of sparkle at Christmas? It’s party time so why not go for heavy metals?  Rodarte showed gold metallic on eyes, lips and even lashes. Marc Jacobs went for an amazing 70’s tribute with metallic blue smoky eyes and shimmery lips. Prada went crazy with seriously silver eye shadow that looked incredible with pale lips. LOVE!
Tip: Wear with Review’s soft pink pearl ‘Gracie lace’ dress.

Animal Print

November 18th, 2010 | Posted in Blog

It’s time to get some animal into your wardrobe. No, I am not talking about yapping puppies. Although they do make great accessories, tucked chicly under your arm. I am talking about animal print. It was a big trend on the runways from Dries van Norten to Gucci to Balmain and now it’s the look du jour.

Of course you can understand why this trend keeps rearing its pretty and elegant head again and again.

It’s because you feel fabulous wearing animal print.

Think about it.

You slip into your ever so soft Review animal print, knit cardigan. You gingerly button it up, carefully revealing just a hint of a black lace camisole. You pull on your 50’s flirty full skirt and slide into your pointiest heels. You feel sexy and feminine. You feel whimsical, and just a little rebellious.  You start to swoosh your tail, and prick up your ears. You bat those long, long black eyelashes. You sharpen your claws. Suddenly you start to feel, shall we say, a little wild and reckless.  You pull out your favourite bright red lipstick and tease your hair. And as elusive as a leopard and as quietly as a cat you slink out the door. You daintily go about your daily business. But then something happens. You start to lick your lips at the thought of tuna for lunch. You find yourself seeking out little squares of sunshine and curling up.

You begin to sleep in the day and party all night.

And then you start to purr…

Anna Dello Russo

November 4th, 2010 | Posted in Blog

Every so often there is a star in the fashion world that everyone falls in love with at the same time. It’s always someone who has a certain élan, a particular chic, a sexy, throw away style. It’s always someone who just oozes their own individuality. Remember when we first clocked Kate Moss? Then we worshipped Caroline Bessette Kennedy. (Bless). We went mad for Carine Roitfeld , crazy for Charlotte Gainsbourg, and wanted to be Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Now there is a new star on the block and she is faaabulous! But she is not your usual garden variety of style icons. She is over 40. She is not an actress or a model. And she doesn’t appear to have famous parents. She is rich and thin. (But, of course!). She is stalked by every fashion blog and magazine. We are talking about Anna Dello Russo. An Italian fashion editor who is currently the Editor At Large for Vogue Japan.

She is wild and eccentric and dresses to match her personality. She has taken to posing for photographers at fashion week like Donatella has taken to spray tan: a true professional. She has brought the whole notion of designer dressing to a new level. You could call it her art form. She says “Clothes for me are a religion”. Anna Dello Russo plans her wardrobe for fashion week 6 months in advance. She is never seen in anything twice. She wears the total designer look from head to toe. She says “I edit my clothes (about 90 outfits for each fashion week) I think of what would look good on camera”. She gets up to swim and do yoga every morning at 5am. She keeps her clothes in an apartment entirely devoted to her wardrobe. It is climate controlled. She has a very amusing blog which has scrawled along the top “I don’t want to be cool: I want to be fashion”. She says crazy, witty things like “I love the shoes. I have many, many pairs. I have the shoes in a big library-a huge library, everything together. Rather than books, you have shoes library”. She says crazy, witty things on twitter like “Dress your BLOG as you dress YOURSELF”

She is fashion’s new star. J’ADR.
