The Great Gatsby

September 29th, 2011 | Posted in Blog

Baz Luhrmann will be happy. The Great Gatsby is the hot trend on the spring 2012 runways from New York to Paris.

Baz is currently shooting The Great Gatsby, his movie adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel. The Great Gatsby follows the story of Nick Carraway arriving in New York in the spring of 1922. This was an era of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll (1920’s style) with glittering dresses, crazy jazz, and a thoroughly modern and free spirit. Nick meets “mysterious, party-giving millionaire Jay Gatsby and is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits”. It’s a reflection of our modern times.

Now the fashion world is in the same mood falling in love with the roaring 20’s. It all started at New York Fashion Week with Marc Jacobs channeling a 1920’s vibe and ending his show with a stage set straight out of Cabaret. Tory Burch said her collection was actually based on Deauville in the 1920’s. It was Ralph Lauren who designed the costumes for the 1974 film version of The Great Gatsby so it was only natural that he revisited that era showing flapper dresses, floppy pants and cricket sweaters.

In London, designers such as Sass and Bide and Temperley showed pretty drop waist dresses and art deco prints. But it was in Milan where the 1920’s flapper girls ran amok on the runways. Gucci ended the show with a series of absolutely divine sequin flapper dresses and Marni’s collection was heavenly with divine embroidered, beaded dresses to swoon over. Prada presented a collection with a hint of the 20’s with sugary pastel knee length skirts, coats and very 20’s inspired jewellery.

Paris Fashion Week has just started and already the trend is showing up at Rochas and Dries Van Noten. One thing is for sure: it’s the end of short tight dresses. It’s time to dance the Charleston!

New York Fashion Week

September 16th, 2011 | Posted in Blog

It’s New York fashion week! The big trends already coming through for next summer? Sporty Luxe, Brights, minimalism and graphics. Oh and a few frills, flounces and peplums just to keep everyone happy. It seems everyone is inspired by either Celine, Balenciaga or Prada’s always quirky take on bad taste prints. “There seems to be no escape from the orgy of prints and color consuming the runways,” Cathy Horyn groaned in NY Times.

The big shock of the week was that Marc Jacobs changed his show date from Monday to Thursday, the last day of NYFW (making fashion editors nervous). Meanwhile, his Marc for Marc Jacobs show was all about minimalism. He ditched his retro look for a modern take with lots of bright colours and virtually no prints. As Vogue UK reported, “Jacobs and his team decided to pare things way, way down … They just worked … Jacobs breathed new life into his decade-old secondary line.” If Marc Jacobs is on the minimalism track it’s only a matter of time for this trend that’s been lurking in the background to really take off.

Everyone was also raving about the Alex Wang show. WWD writes, “Alexander Wang has been setting the bar for street wear, and what makes the work resonate is authenticity. Since the get-go his gritty, not-afraid-to-get-dirty attitude has been unwavering, even in his most feminine collections, while his level of execution evolves. Spring was yet another stellar example.” It was sporty street meets a Moto chic. (Or something like that). As Fashion Wire Daily reported, “This was cool warrior gal chic”. Bring it on! Can’t wait to see what happens over the next couple of weeks in London, Milan and Paris.

2011 VMA’s

September 2nd, 2011 | Posted in Blog

The MTV VMA’s brought out all the stars! Who won on the black carpet? Let’s talk about the good, the bad and the ugly in the fashion stakes.

The Good…
Beyonce
Talk about fierce. She rocks her newly pregnant look with a divine one-shoulder orange Lanvin gown and fabulous long diamond earrings. What a knockout! Then she heads to the stage in a fabulous Dolce & Gabbana sequin jacket over a white shirt and tuxedo trousers. What a Diva! She gets two votes for best dressed.

Selena Gomez
Looking a little too old and sophisticated for her age (Did she borrow this from her mom?), but she nonetheless looks extremely chic in an asymmetric Julien McDonald gown with lacy cutouts and gold metallic Brian Atwood shoes. But c’mon Selena! You’ve got the rest of your life to wear safe black: rock some colour and let go baby!

Louise Roe
She is a fashion editor and MTV host so bronzed British glamazon Louise Roe should get it right. Love the chic Tibi maxi dress with the amazing embellished neckline. She keeps it clean with virtually no jewellery and simple hair. Miley Cyrus are you listening?.

The Bad…
Jessie J
She had a broken foot but that wasn’t going to hold her back. She threw on her kooky cast, tossed a blingy bodysuit over white footless tights, grabbed her crutches and hobbled out the door. I think she forgot her skirt. Bless.

Britney Spears
Who told her to wear this non de la non sequined black Moschino mini? No- one. Maybe that’s the problem. Does she know that even Target now sell black patent peep-toe booties? So nearly right but honey just plain wrong. So 2008.

Miley Cyrus
You like to party in the USA and it shows. Someone tell her to pare it back. She wears way too much jewellery – a chocker, rings and earrings – with a backless Roberto Cavalli dress in a fussy print. I bet she can’t even spell minimalist.

Lady Gaga
When you’ve worn a stinky raw meat dress the only option is to now dress like a man: At least it’s Brooks Brothers and Dior Homme.

The ugly…
Nicki Minaj
Does she think she is GAGA? She has pink intestines on her head and critter socks. I think that’s an ice cream around her neck. The only thing she’s got going is that she can reapply her make up simply by peering down into her top. That’s zany with a capital Z.

Katy Perry
She has lavender hair. She is carrying a Japanese parasol. She is wearing a neon Atelier Versace mini cheongsam. Donatella: is this your idea of a sneaky joke?

Bonnie McKee
Who is she? Who knows: who cares! Her face is pretty, her animal print shoes are fabulous. Something went wrong in the middle. Not even Beyonce could carry off a skintight nude satin romper with a tangle of chains and fingerless gloves. Please explain.

Kreayshawn
If you sound out her name you know why she is wearing this dress. She is creative. Yes, this is a sequined Mickey Mouse dress and a bad hair do. With red sneakers. Nuf said.
