Dress to impress with our guide on the perfect polo outfit.

When we talk about fashion ‘moments’, we think Carrie Bradshaw, Kate Middleton and many others. But way before these style icons arrived on the scene, there was a moment that many fashionistas remember as the outfit that ignited their love for pretty dresses, gorgeous hats and all things fashion - it was the Pretty Woman Polo Outfit. This was an outfit that defined the early 90s era of elegant dressing and effortless style. Simple, chic and devastatingly romantic, we revisit the Polo Trend just in time for the Albert Park, Polo in The City and find out exactly, how do you dress for a game of polo, or is it a match? Either way, I’m sure it means lots of pretty dresses, and we’re definitely down for that.

Dresses... and more dresses

Elegant and understated outfitting is the aim for a day at the polo. Think cotton and lace dresses in whites, yellows, baby pinks and ladylike florals. Dressing for the polo is all about feeling chic and comfortable, so midi length dresses in romantic florals and pastels are a favourite on the field.

It’s time for some coordination

The polo match isn’t the same as a horse race, so if you’re feeling like you need to broaden your occasion outfitting, this is the event to mix it up with some super cute coordinates. We absolutely love a palazzo pant with an off-the-shoulder top combo, or a gorgeous flowing midi skirt with a matching blouse and cardi is complete polo perfection.

What about a playsuit?

We say yes. Considering at the end of the game spectators are encouraged to get on the field and playfully ‘stomp’ grass divots and holes back into the ground (while holding champagne glasses, it’s all very chic), a playsuit is a practical and on-point option for the polo.

Hats off
Unlike horse racing events, it’s not mandatory to wear a hat, headband or any headwear, but if you’re in need of some polo-inspired accessories, consider an embellished headband or an elegant brooch to complete your look. If you’re after sun protection, a beautiful wide brimmed straw hat is a great option… you can thank Ms. Roberts for the inspo.

Solid ground
Grass fields can be a high heeled nightmare on polo day, so pack up your stilettos and opt for a mid-heel, mary-jane, wedge or flat shoe for the occasion - especially if you’re planning to get involved in some grass stomping!
