It began over 30 years ago.

A small Melbourne apparel company saw an opportunity to create designer inspired fashion for women (without the expensive designer price tag!).
Influenced by the romance and femininity of Paris, Review was born.

From the beginning we have been a design-led business and designed in Australia, something we are still proud to have maintained to this day.
Our designers search the world for vintage inspiration in Parisian flea markets and vintage stores in London and New York, drawing inspiration from the romance of eras past.

Our designers are a talented bunch who use this inspiration to come up with unique and quirky designs, which are then brought to life by our talented pattern makers and sample machinists based in Melbourne.

When designing our collections we have always ensured authenticity and individuality, but most importantly we design garments with love and character, hoping to make each and every woman feel beautiful and special.

Today Review has 34 boutiques as well as 64 Myer and David Jones concession stores across Australia, and now New Zealand too!
Our 24/7 online flagship store allows Review Girls all over the world to shop our brand.

Review may have been founded over 30 years ago, but we are still the destination for women wanting fun and feminine fashion.
We proudly produce well-cut basics, suiting with a twist, dressed up daywear and fabulous occasion wear.

Designed in Australia with love

At Review, our brand heritage and design process is very important to us. The brand was founded almost 30 years ago and we are pleased that we have maintained our original heritage being designed in Australia by our talented design team in Melbourne.

“Review was established over 25 years ago, nearly 30 years ago. The brand essence was eclectic and took inspiration from Parisian flea markets and chic French dressing. This influenced every touch point of the brand, from the product right through to the furniture picked for the stores. 30 years on, we still take inspiration from that eclectic look and vintage dressed-up vibe. If Review was a city in the world it would be Paris,” says Lisa.

If you've ever wondered why you can’t find Review clothing anywhere else, it's because of our unique design process.

The Review Design Department is headed up by Lisa and includes six more designers, three pattern-makers and two sample machinists.
Each collection is designed at our design headquarters in Melbourne, and made into reality by this talented bunch.

“Review has always been a design-led business, so the product leads the business. It’s very unique in the Australian retail environment to have design leading the business and not teams of buyers,” says Lisa.

VINTAGE-INSPIRED

When designing the new collections, Lisa embarks on trips to London, New York, Los Angeles and Paris, to find real vintage pieces as inspiration to ensure that Review truly is vintage-inspired.

“We’re very aware of key fashion trends but we also make sure that anything we do is a reflection to the core of the business, vintage-inspired and romantic. Romance comes from the Parisian vibe and looking at vintage shapes and retro eras that have that romantic feel, like the 20s, 50s and 60s,” Lisa explains.

Lisa combs through flea markets and vintage stores looking for pieces to inspire the collection. She fills suitcases full of ideas, frocks and trims that she brings back to Australia to use as inspiration with the design team. She also uses the trip to find ideas for our store design, which is just as unique and beautiful as our clothing.

From sketch to sample

Upon her return to Australia, Lisa and our design team brainstorm the next collection and start sketching designs. Next, the sketches are brought to life by our pattern makers who draft the patterns for the sample machinists to make the first samples. Our fitting process is done in-house on a real-life model too.

“Review embraces the traditional process of design, employing people who are experts in their fields in pattern making and design. By doing this we keep the heritage of the brand alive and create unique product you won’t find anywhere else. We are also keeping the design industry alive in Australia by employing people with skills that are potentially dying out in the industry elsewhere.”
