How to Care for Faux Leather Handbags

Faux leather handbags are a perfect choice, not only because they look great, but for ethical reasons too. Faux leather is usually made of Polyurethane (PU leather) and gives you that same look and feel as traditional leather while not costing you a small fortune (which ultimately means you can own even more bags and who doesn’t love that!?). You and your carryall handbag are attached at the hip (quite literally!), so here we lay out Review approved care instructions to keep your beloved looking good as new for longer!

Because faux leather is made to mimic real leather, the care instructions are actually quite similar - but on the easier side which we love! A hot tip to keep your handbag in tip top quality is to have a few daily bags on rotation. Not only will this open up the opportunity for perfectly coordinated outfits, but it will prevent your bag from wearing out due to continuous daily use. Also be mindful of the amount of weight you are carrying in the bag every day. If it’s not absolutely essential to be carrying a large water bottle, laptop, and other heavy items in your bag every day then we recommend trying to and minimise the weight where possible to prevent unnecessary strain on the handles and hardware.

On The Inside

On The Inside

As fellow on-the-go women, I think we can all admit that we store too many bits and bobs in our handbags (because you never know when you’ll need that special little thing, right!?). From blush to lipstick, receipts, notepads and more, it’s fair to say our precious purses can sometimes be at risk of potential staining. Your first step of keeping your handbag clean is minimising the staining potential.

You can do this by:

  • Storing your makeup in a separate make-up bag or pouch so that it’s not floating around freely in your handbag.
  • Ensure all pens have caps to prevent any unwanted scribbles on your perfectly lined handbag.
  • Set a reminder each week to clean out any rubbish or unnecessary items from your bag regularly to avoid any build-up of dirt or clutter.

Sometimes stains can occur because let’s face it… life happens! Whether it’s a spilt drink, or you’ve dropped your bag in a puddle, don’t fret because cleaning your faux leather bag is easy if you know what to do. One thing to know for sure is to NEVER put your synthetic leather bag in the washing machine or clothes dryer. Hot water and air is extremely detrimental to your bag and a big no-no that should be avoided at all costs.

Instead, here’s how to safely and effectively remove a stain from the outside of your bag:

  1. Mix water with some mild dish soap or laundry detergent. Avoid using any harsh solutions as these can cause the bag to become dry.
  2. Dip a soft microfiber cloth into the solution. We recommend staying away from any rough or harsh clothes that may scratch or damage the bag.
  3. Gently wash the stain away with your hands. If the stain is a little bit more stubborn, try mixing water with vinegar instead. Vinegar is completely safe to use on synthetic leather and also has the bonus of naturally ridding any odours from the bag.
  4. Allow your handbag to air dry completely. Make sure you don’t store it away until it’s 100% dry to avoid any moulding or bacteria growth.

Top tip:

Keep a packet of baby wipes in your bag for any emergency moments when you’re out and about. You can use these to wipe down the bag quickly and easily.

How to Store Your Bag

How to Store Your Bag

Your handbag is going to love you the most if you store it in a dust bag, out of the sun and in a cool dry place. If you don’t have a dust bag, a pillowcase makes a perfect replacement. To best maintain the shape of the bag you should store it flat on a shelf and use paper or fabric to fill it in so that it doesn’t start to sag. You want to ensure you don’t stack your purses on top of each other as this could cause crushing and consequently contribute to the bags losing their pretty shapes. You should also avoid hanging your bag at all costs to prevent any unnecessary weight on the handles and hardware.
