Jane Austen

(1775-1817) Author

An early day's feminist, Jane Austen is a well-known household name - most commonly renown for her iconic literature that remains on the best-selling novels list even to today's date. We would like to crown her as the original rom-com queen, gracing the world with her witty charm conveyed in novels such as Pride and the Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Did you know that she wrote these novels when she was just a teenager? Incredible! We think the quote "The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid", perfectly captures her essence. Her books were originally published under her brother's name and it wasn't until his demise that she finally came forward as the author. The plots of her novels often explored woman's social standing, marriage and economic security in times where these topics were on the taboo side.

Thank you Jane for paving the way for all female authors!

Anne Frank's account of living as a young girl in Germany and Austria during World War II will forever be remembered as a powerful and moving diary, which was published by her father as the only survivor of the Frank family. Many will be familiar with the fact that Anne and her family hid in an annex throughout the war for years before being discovered and sent to concentration camps in 1944. Anne's intimate telling of her experience during one of the most inhumane moments in history is widely prized for her perspective on universal human qualities such as love, emotion, passion, hope, desire, fear and strength.

Thank you Anne for your ongoing sense of optimism and wonder during unreal hardship!

Being a poet, singer, civil rights activist. and award winning writer, Maya is admired for many reasons. Her memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings made her the first ever African-American with a best-selling novel. Growing up with a difficult childhood and exposed to racial discrimination throughout her life, Maya became a virtual mute for many years in response to her trauma. Her voice in her novels however was loudly heard across the world and played a crucial part in the civil rights movement illustrating how strength of character and love of literature can help overcome racism and suffering.

Thank you Maya for being a beacon of strength and sharing words of healing with the world!

Self-proclaimed the "virgin queen" because she chose to marry her country instead of a man, Queen Elizabeth was never meant to reign the throne of England being a female, however she proved to be one of the greatest female leaders in history over the 63 years that she reigned. As the portrait shows, Queen Elizabeth was a red head and lived up to the fiery nature, known to be intelligent, cunning and with a hot temper but never the less was praised for being a stable figure throughout the Victorian Era.
