Layer Up for Winter

With winter fast approaching, there’s only one thing for it: layering. Layering is key in the lead up to the cold weather and beyond, but wrapping up warm doesn’t have to take precedence over style. To see you though the chill, here’s our advice on how to layer up and look good – no compromises required.

BEWARE OF THE BULK

When it comes to cold weather dressing, there’s a tendency to throw on every layer you can find. While you’ll certainly be warm, this can result in the possibility of bulking up like the hulk and that is a big no no. Play around with different tops and focus on lightweight fabrics for your base layer. A billowy blouse may not be the first thing that comes to mind for winter dressing, but layered over a camisole, under a jacket and wrapped beneath a scarf, it’s chic, breathable and won’t leave you flushed. Plus, there’s plenty of room for your wool coat too. Consider slim fit pants and pencil skirts to maintain a streamlined silhouette when you’re layered up on top.

A NEED FOR KNITWEAR

It’s time for knitted essentials and a cardigan is a foolproof choice. Choose a flattering shade to suit your skin tone and wear it buttoned up with a skirt, or why not layer it over a dress, keeping it loose and open to reveal the detail underneath. For a special touch, Review’s iconic monogram cardigans ensure your knit will stand out from the others.

FAUX FRIENDS

Accessories have the power to make or break an outfit and when scarf season comes around, a faux fur stole can only make it. Don’t veer away from colour, it will uplift muted tones and transform your winter ensemble into something bold and brilliant. Faux fur is made for a coat, but when the outerwear comes off, it looks just as chic with knitwear.

CUE THE COLOUR

When layering up, it’s best to play it safe(ish) in terms of colour – no one wants to look like a traffic light after all. If tonal dressing is on the cards, add a pop of colour to your outfit in the form of your outerwear, knitwear or accessories, just don’t choose all three. Patterns should be reserved for just one piece. We’re loving printed pants as well as polka dot blouses for the upcoming season. Also, a berry lipstick never goes amiss when the temperatures plummet.
